New companies like DoorDash, Uber Eats, GrubHub and others have come into being to meet the growing demand for food delivery. Senior citizens look for discounts on food, and there are many senior discounts on food deliveries and grocery stores as well.
Maybe you will recognize some of these names.
Since the beginning of 2020, many supermarkets have designated senior shopping hours on senior discount days to protect the most vulnerable from infection. Some of the following stores have discounts for pick-up or deliveries. Others remain in-store discounts only. Check with your local grocery store for more details.
What follows may not be as cheap as Meals on Wheels in terms of food cost or delivery cost, but not everyone qualifies for Meals on Wheels – or even wants them. What follows are potential savings every senior citizen might be able to enjoy.
Senior Discounts on Food Deliveries and Groceries
American Discount Stores offers a 10 percent senior discount on the entire purchase every Monday for seniors over 62 with a valid ID.
Basha’s gives a 10 percent discount on the first Wednesday every month for those 55 and up. The deal applies to a single transaction. You must present an ID and use the Thank You Card. The discount does not apply to prescriptions, alcohol, tobacco products, fuel, or lottery tickets.
Bi-Lo gives 5 percent off every Wednesday for those over 60 with their Senior Bonuscard.
Cheryl’s Cookies offers a 20 percent discount on cookies and desserts to AARP members with the code AARP2. On orders of $79.99, you can receive $20 off with the code AARP3.
Concord Food Co-op gives a generous 15 percent senior discount on both Tuesdays and Sundays. Those age 62 and up can apply for a Senior Card to qualify for the discount.
DeCicco Family Markets provides a discount to those over 62 with a DiCicco Preferred card and identification. The amount and day may vary by location, and the senior must be present at the time of purchase.
Fred Meyer gives seniors over 55 a 10 percent discount on selected items with a valid ID the first Tuesday of each month. The discount includes private brand groceries and nutrition items.
Fry’s Food Stores has a 10 percent discount for those over 55 on the first Wednesday of every month. To receive the discount, you must be a Fry’s VIP Club member and show a valid ID. Most stores will also grant the discount for pick-up orders. Prescriptions, alcohol, tobacco products, and fuel are not eligible for the discount.
Harry & David offers AARP members 20 percent off with code AARP2 and $20 off orders more than $79.99 with the code AARP3.
Harris Teeter provides a 5 percent discount to seniors every Thursday for those 60 and up. Seniors can also take advantage of ExpressLane Online Shopping pick-up times from 9 am to 2 pm on Thursdays. Grocery delivery for seniors is reduced from $10 to $5 on Thursdays as well.
Hy-Vee on 156th & Maple Street in Omaha offers individuals 55 years and older a 5 percent discount on Wednesdays, excluding pharmacy, tobacco, and alcohol items. Other stores may have senior discounts on different days of the week.
Lewis’s department store has a 10 percent senior discount for those over 55 the entire month of May. The discount does not apply to prescriptions, alcohol, or tobacco products.
Lunardi’s has a 5 percent discount for individuals 65 and over on Tuesdays and Thursdays. This deal is an in-store discount only and not available for pick-ups. The discount does not apply to dairy, alcohol, tobacco products, or specials.
New Seasons has both veteran and senior days. On Tuesdays, verified veterans can receive a 10 percent discount on most items. On Wednesdays, those over the age of 65 can also take advantage of the 10 percent discount.
The Popcorn Factory offers discounts to AARP members. The code AARP2 will give you a 20 percent discount on purchases, while the code AARP3 will save you $20 on orders of $79.99 or more.
Shari’s Berries gives a 15 percent discount on chocolate-covered strawberries to AARP members with the code AARP15.
Silver Cuisine by BistroMD provides AARP members a discount of 25 percent off their first meal order of $99 and free shipping. All $99 orders after the first are eligible for a 10 percent discount with free shipping.
Stock Yards gives AARP members a discount of 20 percent on steaks, seafood, poultry, and burgers with the code AARP2. On orders of $79.99, you can receive $20 off with the code AARP3.
Uncle Giuseppe’s Marketplace offers a 5 percent senior discount to those over 65 on Wednesdays. To register, you must take a government-issued ID to the store’s customer service desk.
Wolferman’s provides a 20 percent discount on baked goods to AARP members with the code AARP2. On orders of $79.99, you can receive $20 off with the code AARP3.
